Traders as far as India,Turkey,China and Persian gulf used to sail to these island for trade in different commodities.
As an early destination for such traders the island of Mombasa became a hot place for early settlers and explorers as far as the middle east,far east and southern European people,with these kind of new trend it lead to the scramble of controlling these island which was the gate way to India ocean early trade route and in 1590's the then rulers of these island built the famous land mark of fort Jesus,was built in a European fort style by Italian architect,the fort was built inform of person laying facing the ground with the head adjusting towards the shoreline.
Today Fort Jesus boost as one of the interesting monuments in these sunny city of Mombasa,its one of world heritage site and a museum,the fort host lot of early history of Europeans along the Indian ocean east Africa coastline.
Another site of interest is the old town and the old town harbour on the north side of the fort Jesus,old town boost old Arabic architect and Swahili architect,at the old harbour is where many trade takes places to date,boats still using the old harbour on the north side of the main Kilindini harbour.
Macknon market is another building with lot of interest as it was build during early 1900's with its equipments imported from the United Kingdom.these is currently the centre of trade activities by the locals and mainly in food stuffs.
The island host a lot of accommodation from simple lodges to luxury hotels with few distance from the town centre.there are hotels like Sapphire hotel and the Royal Court close to the railway station and Indian temples.the hotels are close to town at a walking distance,in town centre there is the famous Castle hotel which stand a long Moi Avenue,its close to the Turks which stand as the symbol of Mombasa town.these are few hotels but there many around and easily access from the main airport located on the mainland west of Mombasa.
South of the island is connected with twenty four hours ferry services which make it much easier for incoming and out going travellers through the channels to the south coast.
The inhabitant of these historical island are mostly Swahili's and some Bantu speakers,there notable European and Asians mostly from India who settle in Mombasa long time,in most of the town streets there many restaurants saving local dishes and some westernised food stuff.The night life of these island town is always funny as the town is saved with night clubs and bars in twenty four hours,here the local communities are very cooperative and always willingly to assist strangers.its worth to experience these formerly Indian ocean trade route centre,it boost warm weather and its in tropical climate.
